New Zealand Job Seeker Benefit 2025, How to Apply?
Your entitlement to Jobseeker Support is generally backdated to the earliest day possible. This will usually be either when you become eligible for assistance or the first time you contacted Work and Income, whichever happened first. As soon as you know you will be out of work, call Work and Income to apply or complete an online application.
You can apply online through MYMSD. We will also check to see if you can get any other help from us based on the answers you give in your application. Jobseeker support is a weekly payment that helps people while they are looking for work or can’t work right now.
Applying online is the easiest way to apply for a benefit. You have 20 working days from the date you first contact us to complete the application process.
Steps to apply online
Step 1- Get a client number (if you don’t have one)
This is a 9-digit we issue the first time you deal with us. This could be through Work and Income, Studylink, Seniors or Youth Service.
Step 2- Log in to MyMSD
MyMSD is our online service where you can apply and manage your information online. If you have not used MyMSD before, you’ll need to register first.
Step 3- Complete the online application form
In MyMSD, select “Apply” to go to the online form. Some of your information will be automatically pre-filled, based on information you have already told us.
The online form takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete. It will automatically work out what you might be able to get based on your answers. If the application times out when you log in to return to your form you will start from the last complete page.
Step 4- Complete your next step in MyMSD
MyMSD has a list of steps you need to complete once you submit your application. If you can’t complete any of the steps or have a question, talk to us.
The next steps are:
- Read and agree to your obligations
- Provide your documents (you can upload them in MyMsd)
- Verify your identity
- Book an appointment
Step 5- We`ll process your application
We`ll let you know by phone or letter once we have processed your application. If you disagree with our decision, you can ask for a review of the decision.
Step 6- When your payments will start
MyMSD will tell your payments will start. Most weekly benefits have a stand-down. This is the period you can’t get any money from us. It is usually 1 or 2 weeks after your application is approved.
Your payments will start from the date after your stand-down finishes. If you have been working recently, your payments may take longer to start.
Once your payment starts, you won’t get any money in the first week. This is because we pay you for the week that`s just been.
