Through Birth Registration
In many cases, birth registration is done by paper form at the hospital or birthing centre. However, residents in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta also provided the option for online registration. Make sure to provide your consent and Social Insurance Number (SIN) so that the Vital Statistics Agency of your province or territory can securely share the relevant birth registration information with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you do not provide your consent, your information will not be sent to the CRA, and you will need an alternative method to apply for the Canada Child Benefit (CBA) again.
Through My Account (Online)
If you did not apply for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) when you registered the birth of your newborn, you can apply online through My Account (your personal Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) account).
Follow the steps given below:
- Sign in to My Account.
- From the overview page, click on “Benefits and Credits” in the navigation menu on the left side of the screen.
- On the Benefits and Credits page, find the “Child Information” section and click on “+Add.”
- You will need to complete three steps:
- Confirm your contact details, marital status, and citizenship.
- Enter your child’s information.
- Review and submit your application.
- After submitting, a confirmation screen will display the status of your application.
If additional documents are required, such as proof of birth for your child, you will see a “Submit Documents” button to provide those documents.
Through Mail
- The first step is to fill out and sign the Form RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application.
- Include any additional documents, such as if your documents are printed in any language other than English; we need a copy of the original documents with an acceptable English or French translation.
- Mail the form to your tax centre.
